How I Get My Type 2 Curly Hair Straight & The Products I Use
Having curly hair is a blessing and a curse! You know that saying “everyone wants what they don’t have”? It is totally true.
Growing up I loved the look straight hair gave off and how easy to manage straight hair was.
I spent my whole youth trying different ways and products to get my curls straight, but never managed to find the perfect straightener or products that could sustain my thick Puerto Rican curls.
I know I am not the only one who has experienced this, but my mom used to put all types of oils in my hair while straightening it to help with “frizz,” but all it did was make me look like a damn greaseball. LOL! Also, every time I would straighten my hair I would always be left with lumps/waves; it would never come out super straight.
It was not until I met my hair stylist (she is the BOMB.COM) who put me on to these amazing products that make my hair so sleek, shiny and pin straight.
The products I use to straighten my hair are:
These four products are the holy grail; the only products that have been able to tame my hair and get it looking beautiful, shiny and straight!
How I straighten my hair
I always plan to straighten my hair accordingly. When I know I will be straightening my hair I will plan to wash my hair the day before I do my hair or that same morning. I usually wash my hair with a non moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Why? I have found that the times I use a very moisturizing shampoo and conditioner it leaves an oily residue in my hair which causes the straightening to look off…also giving an oily look to the hair which is a big no no for me. With this being said, the products I wash my hair with are the Chi Keratin shampoo and conditioner. They smell amazing, make my hair super soft and do not leave any residue.
I like to wash my hair hours before I actually straighten it so it allows my hair to air dry. The goal is to use the least amount of heat on your hair.
Once my hair has air dried, I like to brush out my knots and use two pumps of the Redken frizz dismiss oil serum. I swear by this serum and honestly believe it is the reason (aside from the straighter) that my hair comes out looking so shiny; it is amazing! I have been using this serum for over 2 years now and can not go without it. It is a serum to reduce frizz, does not leave your hair oily at all, and also is a heat protectant which is a major plus! I like to smother the two pumps of this oil between the palms of my hands and evenly coat the ends of my hair, starting from the nape of my neck to the ends. With any left over oil, I will lightly go over the top of my hair for added protection and shine.
After the serum has been Coated, I will blow dry my hair straight with the Ceramix Xtreme by BaBylissPRO Blow dryer. This blow dryer is amazing and super affordable! The heat setting I like to use is High and Hot. I know it may not be the best for your hair but it gets the job done. I like to section my hair into small pieces and blow dry my hair straight, using the round brush to comb the pieces of my hair while drying. I found that by adding this step into my straightening process has made a huge difference in how my hair comes out.
Lastly, once I have blow dried my hair straight, I will pass the flat iron over the pieces of my hair to straighten it. The straightener I use is the Nano Titanium by BaBylissPRO 2”. This is the best straightener ever! My hair stylist uses this straightener on all of her clients; it leaves your hair looking like you got a keratin treatment. The best of the best. I use the straightener on the highest heat setting. I also section my hair into pieces while I straighten it!
After that you will have beautiful, shiny straight hair that will have all necks turning!
